  • Fracture and dislocation of the hip with ipsilateral fracture of the femoral shaft is a rare injury, and this injury follows on severe trauma, combined with multiple organ damage. The surgeon as usually aware of the femoral shaft fracture but the hip joint dislocation is often not recognized at initial trauma. Early diagnosis and reduction of the hip joint dislocation is to decrease complication, and then early joint motion and anatomical reduction of the hip joint is to improve prognosis.
From March 1987 to December 1990, Four cases of fracture and dislocation of the hip with ipsilateral fracture of the femoral shaft were treated by open reduction and internal fixation, through the lateral approach about fracture of the femoral shaft and the Hocker-Langenback approach about the fracture and dislocation of the hip, and then the motion of the hip joint was started with balanced suspended skeletal fraction from post operative 1st day for 4 weeks. The good result was obtained in all four cases.
